Zara inhaled a gulp of air. Had Murphy heard their discussion? Did he care that she’d made plans without him? She shifted her gaze to the pass-through. His expression unreadable, Daniel shrugged and pointed to his watch, then to his gas station, signaling he had a customer. She waved and he mouthed “later,” then headed for the door.

Frank held open the door of Zetmer’s Hardware, which also doubled as the town’s post office, and waited for his partner to join him on the sidewalk.

Though just a.m., the May air was thick and sticky and had both men sweating, a true testament to the severity of late-spring temperatures in Texas.

“Aren’t you going to open it?” Chuck asked, indi-cating the Next Day Delivery envelope Frank had tucked under his arm.

Instead of answering, Frank continued his march down Main Street to their cabin. Once inside, he walked to the window air-conditioning unit and turned the dial to high, then pulled out a chair. Sitting down, he placed the packet on the desk in front of him and stared.

Chuck balanced on the edge of his desk and reached over, but before he could snag the letter, Frank snatched it up and zipped it open. Inside was a single sheet of paper, which he extracted and began to read.

“So what does it say?”

“See for yourself,” Frank finally said, his mouth

curled in a satisfied smile. He sat back and watched while Chuck moved his lips as he read.

“This—this can’t be right,” the younger agent stuttered, tossing the report on the desk. “Something’s not kosher. It can’t be.”

“Sorry, but government labs are rarely wrong. I think the big brass would be miffed if we arrested the woman for polluting the creek with a coating of harmless protein and other biodegradable substances, don’t you agree?”

Chuck plopped into his chair. “Well, shit, the report has to be worth something. It says right here they never saw a compound like it.”

Frank pulled a tissue from a box on his blotter and swiped at his forehead. When was the pup going to learn a little protocol? They needed hard evidence before they could make an arrest. If they jumped the gun and spooked whoever the alien was, this assignment was over.

“Can’t you read? That paper says that goop was nothing more than a combination of ordinary proteins with a few amino acids and normal chemical compounds thrown in for good measure. They could identify all but percent of the substance, which wasn’t enough to worry them.”

“Not enough to—What are they—idiots? The report only adds to the proof that we had an alien life-form landing here. And I’m still betting on that waitress.” He folded his arms and leaned back in the chair. “You should have seen the once-over she gave

me this morning when I stopped at the counter to pick up a paper.”

“Oh, for chrissake.” Frank rolled his eyes. “Her giving you a strange look doesn’t mean a damned thing.

Instead of concentrating on the woman, we need to get busy canvassing the local ranches and farms.
